Michael's research into female psychology began in Belfast in 1989, a few weeks before returning to the US for an extended third stay.

His primary interest for many years after was how women are portrayed in art and movies, particularly in the gothic-horror and film-noir genres.

After 1995, Michael concentrated on works by Feminists such as Camille Paglia and Phyllis Chesler, as well as on the entire corpus of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and other prominent thinkers. Michael's study of psychology included the insights of Existentialist psychologists, and of lesser known masters such as Otto Rank, Erich Neumann, Arthur Janov, Wilhelm Reich, Thomas Szasz and Otto Weininger, etc.

Michael's research continued after the new millennium, focusing on the works of Alice Miller, Karen Horney, Melanie Klein and Anna Freud.

His book Dragon Mother: A New Look at the Female Psyche was released in 2017, with the sequel Adultism: The Reign of the Terrible Mother, published in early 2019.
